Delivered face-to-face over three interactive days, this nationally recognised qualification is offered in partnership between South Metropolitan TAFE and TAFE SA. The course breaks down complex nuclear concepts into clear, practical learning.

You’ll explore how nuclear-powered submarines operate, what safety and security look like in the industry, and how technical and non-technical roles contribute to Australia’s future submarine capabilities.

This course is ideal for anyone preparing to work in defence, shipbuilding, engineering, logistics, cybersecurity, or support roles connected to the Nuclear-Powered Submarine Program. Whether you’re new to the field or already working in industry, this course gives you the support and structure you need to build your skills and confidence.

  • There will be some pre-reading required prior to commencement of this course.

    It is preferable that you undertake this course while already employed within the defence industry.
  • - Strong foundation in nuclear science – understand radiation, reactors and how nuclear energy is used safely in naval settings.
    - Practical safety knowledge – learn the systems, procedures and protective measures that keep people and environments safe.
    - Insight into real submarine operations – see how Virginia-class nuclear submarines work, how they differ from conventional submarines, and what this means for Australia.
    - Industry-relevant cyber awareness – gain the skills to recognise cyber risks and protect critical information.
    - Confidence to work in a high-security, high-reliability environment – understand roles, responsibilities, and teamwork in nuclear-supported operations.
    - Scenario-based practice – apply your learning to realistic situations involving safety, sustainment, and cyber resilience
