Regional Competitions 2026

Every two years, more than 500 Regional Competitions are held in 34 regions across Australia. They test the skills and knowledge of 4000+ apprentices, trainees and students, who have the chance to win gold, silver and bronze medals and go on to compete at a national level.

  • Who can compete?
    • Students training in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector can compete in WorldSkills competitions, and there are separate competition categories for high school (VETiS) students.
    • To be eligible to enter a Regional competition, you must meet at least one of the following criteria:
    • Be undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship in an Australian RTO/TAFE/University
    • Be undertaking studies towards a qualification at an Australian RTO/TAFE or University
    • Undertaken/completed a relevant qualification at an Australian RTO/TAFE or University
    • There is no age criteria to enter the Regionals, however, to be eligible to proceed to the National Championships, the National Age Ruling will apply.

  • Who are the judges?
    • Regional Competitions are judged by experienced teachers, tradespeople, and industry representatives that have an eye for detail and passion for their skill category
    • Regional Competition judges may also be involved in the WorldSkills Australia National Championships
    • More than half of the judges at the 2025 National Championships were TAFE educators, a reflection of the commitment and passion that exists with educators across the country.

National Championships

2027 WorldSkills Australia National Championships

The WorldSkills Australia National Championships is Australia’s largest vocational education and skills excellence competition. 

The competition running over three days at Skills Show Australia with over 700 top regional competitors from across the country, will come together to showcase their talents and benchmark their skills against industry peers on the national stage. 

The competition will take place from 3-6 June 2027 at the Adelaide Showgrounds, concluding with a medal ceremony in Adelaide.

  • How is TAFE SA involved

    TAFE SA is a proud supporter of WorldSkills Australia's regional competitions and National Championships. 

    As the 2026 regional competitions unfold across the country, they spotlight the next generation of skilled professionals, building momentum toward the 2027 National Championships in Adelaide, South Australia. Along the way, the aim is to strengthen international collaboration, invest in leadership, and celebrate skills excellence on a national and global stage. 

    In 2027, TAFE SA will be a WorldSkills Partner for the National Championships in Adelaide providing over 80% of the competition materials and equipment required to put on the enormous event.

  • About the event

    Adelaide has officially been announced as the host for the 2027 WorldSkills Australia National Championships and Skills Show.

    • The 2027 WorldSkills Australia National Championships are a free event covering June 3 - 6 2027 at the Adelaide Showgrounds.
    • The event is expected to attract thousands of competitors, trainers, employers, industry partners and spectators to South Australia, boosting the state’s profile as a national leader in vocational education and training (VET).
    • The National Championships will be co-located with the Adelaide Careers and Employment Expo, creating a unique opportunity for visitors to not only witness world-class skills in action, but discover exciting future career opportunities through interactive events, demonstrations, and the opportunity to speak with employers and industry experts.

  • Who are the competitors?
    • Across more than 60 skill categories, over 700 of the country’s best apprentices, trainees, and skilled professionals will battle it out for gold—and a chance to represent Australia on the world stage.
    • These young professionals have all earned their place at the National Championships through rigorous regional competitions, demonstrating exceptional skill, precision, and passion in their chosen field. The top performers in eligible skills may earn a coveted spot in Team Australia (“The Skillaroos”), set to compete in Aichi Japan in 2028.
    • The global event will bring together around 1,300 competitors from over 60 countries, making it the largest skills showcase in the world.

  • Who are the judges?
    • Adjudicating a category at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships is an immense honour, bestowed on only the most skilled, rigorous, and dedicated tradespeople and teachers.
    • Expressions of Interest for Judges for Nationals in Adelaide will open in August 2026
