Learning English at Home
Learn English in your home with a tutor.
The Volunteer Tutor Scheme allows you to learn English at home with the help of a tutor. You can study at your own pace and choose the areas of English you want to improve. You can work on speaking and listening, practice your reading or writing. Your tutor will also help you learn about life in Australia so that you can settle well in the community. Your tutor will work with you on the things that are important to you.
Learn important information about living in Australia.
The first part of the Adult Migrant English Program is a settlement course. This course will help you settle in Australia. It includes practical help with common issues such as transport, health and housing. Other topics include driving, Australian law, money and work. You will also get to practice your English and ask questions about life in Australia.
Get ready to find a job.
AMEP offers a range of courses to help you prepare for employment. Some are available as part of the AMEP entitlement. Others are offered to learners who have completed AMEP. In AMEP short courses, you can learn about first aid, workplace health and safety, and driving rules. The Settlement Language Pathways to Employment and Training (SLPET) course provides workplace English training for several types of workplace, as well as job search skills and a work experience placement. SLPET is available to AMEP learners who are active job-seekers and have completed 75% of their entitlement, or are close to achieving functional English.
Volunteer to help migrants and refugees learn English.
The Volunteer Tutor Scheme staff match trained volunteers with migrants and refugees wanting to learn English who are unable to attend classes. Volunteers need to speak and write English well and be able to offer a few hours each week.
All volunteer tutors undertake a specific English as a Second Language (ESL) tutor training course. This course includes practical ideas to help with tutoring and will prepare you to work with adult students in ESL programs. Volunteers will be required to provide a minimum commitment of six months to the Volunteer Tutor Scheme and undergo two Department of Human Services (DHS) Screening Checks - WWCC and Vulnerable Persons.
