SHORT COURSE

Italian Wine Odyssey

Description

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by Italian wines, where there are more than 1,000 native grape varieties and hundreds of regional styles. But that is what makes Italy so interesting and complex, full of delicious and varied wines.

In this introductory class we will cover the major winemaking regions of Italy and their most famous styles and grapes. During the course we will taste and dive into wines from north to south, labelling laws, history and regional cuisines. If you would like to know more about Italian grapes and wines join us on a three-part introductory tasting journey through the wine regions of Italy and Italian native grapes.

Each session will be led by Gill Gordon-Smith IWE, the first Australian to pass the rigorous Italian Wine Expert exam and a small producer with a firm focus on locally grown Italian varieties.

The sessions will explore and taste a selection of wines from the below listed regions. Topics covered include:
- Italian culture and history;
- Location;
- The Italian Quality Pyramid;
- Labelling and wine laws;
- Overview of the main grapes;
- How to pronounce the names of Italian varieties;
- Tasting and evaluation.

Italian Regions:
- Northern Italy (Friuli Venezia Guilia, Trentino-Alto Adige, Lombardy, Veneto, Piedmont)
- Central Italy (Tuscany, Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, Umbria, Emilia Romagna)
- Southern Italy (Sicily, Sardinia, Campania/Basilicata, Puglia, Calabria)

Note: wines tasted will depend on what is available in the market.
