Work in the mineral and petroleum industries

TAFE SA mining and petroleum courses cover the exploration, extraction and processing of minerals, oil and gas. You can study soil science, geology, hydrogeology, mineralogy, petrology, and risk control. Other topics include spatial data, environmental management, and site rehabilitation.

Mining qualifications prepare you for a range of skilled positions in an open cut mine or quarry. Courses in geoscience and exploration qualify you for a career in mineral and petroleum exploration. Or you can train for work in an oil or gas production facility at our Onshore Petroleum Centre of Excellence training facility at Tonsley.

Onshore Petroleum Centre of Excellence

The Onshore Petroleum Centre of Excellence at the TAFE SA Tonsley campus is a fully immersive simulated oil and gas production environment for technical training. It allows training in oil and gas operations, including safety, sustainable operational principles and maintenance activities, without expensive fly-in, fly-out arrangements.

Using water in place of oil and compressed air to simulate gas, the facility includes different pump types, gas compressors, a pig launcher and receiver, gas metering skid, field separator and small tanks, as well as associated pressure safety valves, flow valves and other instrumentation.

Roxby Downs and Mining

TAFE SA's Roxby Downs campus services one of South Australia's most remote communities. The town's major employer, BHP Billiton, has a strong, long-standing relationship with TAFE SA. Apprentices who work at nearby Olympic Dam receive industry-leading training at TAFE SA. Watch the video to learn more about TAFE SA's Roxby Downs campus.
