Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND)

The Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital (LLND) assessment is a tool used to evaluate a student’s foundational skills in reading, writing, and maths. Completion of an LLND helps TAFE SA identify and assist students with any potential learning or support needs, and in some cases, used as evidence of academic eligibility.

Purpose of the LLND

TAFE SA must ensure you have the foundational skills needed to succeed and provide support where needed. We do this by assessing prior evidence of study, or by asking you to complete an LLND assessment.

All qualifications except Higher Education courses, have additional LLND assessment outcome requirements as part of Course Admissions Requirements (CAR) when applying for a place at TAFE SA.

If applying for a VET Student Loan, your LLND results may also be used as evidence of your academic suitability to undertake the course.

Contents of an LLND Assessment

The LLND  assessment is tailored to the individual, and the sections, questions, and timing may vary depending on the qualification. The online assessment is presented as a combination of written and visual questions with multiple-choice answers, addressing everyday numeracy and reading comprehension. Some assessments will also contain a writing section that requires written responses to proposed scenarios.

Supervised LLND  assessments are completed at the participant’s own pace within a supervised three hour session. Applicants may not require the full three hours to complete their LLND Assessment and can exit the session once finished.

Depending on an applicant’s current skill level and the requirements of their qualification, they may only be required to complete a snapshot assessment of their skills. This typically takes from 15 minutes to an hour to complete. If additional understanding of your skills is required, your assessment may be extended in real time so we can further assess your skills. This more comprehensive assessment can take up to three hours to complete.

An applicant may be required to start with a more comprehensive assessment if it is an academic requirement for their chosen qualification. If they wish to undertake a VET Student Loan, it may be used as academic suitability.

Undertaking Your LLND Assessment

Applicants will be directed to their LLND assessment via email, or in some cases, an advisement from a school or organisation assisting with the application. If you require further assistance, you can call the TAFE SA Customer Support team for help on 1800 882 661.

Applicants and students with a disability or medical condition

Eligible applicants with documentation from a medical practitioner, psychologist, or other accredited health specialist can apply for individual support or adjustments to the LLND.

To discuss your needs, you can phone the TAFE SA Customer Support on 1800 882 661 or book a time to connect with a Student Success and Wellbeing team member using our disability support booking system. You can use the Medical Practitioner Report or provide a letter written by your treating practitioner for documentation.

We recommend you book an appointment a minimum of 7 days prior to your scheduled LLND session to discuss your individual circumstances.

Apprenticeship and Traineeship Students

LLND exemptions do not apply to apprenticeship or traineeship students; however, students who have completed an LLND assessment with TAFE SA in the last 3 years may be eligible for exemption.

Outcomes of the LLND

The outcome of an LLND assessment will be evaluated against the application requirements of each student to determine the best path forward.

If your LLND results indicate that additional support is needed, you may still receive an offer. However, you could be required to complete Bridging Units or a literacy and numeracy course. Bridging Units are completed alongside your course and a TAFE Ready course is completed before you study your intended qualification and you may have to resit an LLND assessment before commencing.
