Description
This course is held at the Adelaide College of the Arts (AC Arts) for students who want to follow their passion and dream of becoming an actor.
Over a period of 12 months the course will cover:
Term 1 (Feb-April):
Improvisation
Students will be guided through structured improvisation in order to gain knowledge and skills to begin to build scenes, accept and build offers and explore characters. Improvisation is an excellent basis to learn acting skills, as it teaches students to listen, respond, and follow impulses in the moment of performance.
Movement
This subject will help students access movement as non-verbal expression to experience embodiment for performance. Tutors will use various movement techniques to develop students’ awareness of their physical abilities, and to learn to use their bodies to fully express themselves as artists. An actor’s body is vital in creative expression, so this subject sets students up well to study acting with an open, expressive physical instrument.
Term 2 (May-June):
Acting
Students will learn the fundamentals of acting in this subject. They will learn how to begin to create a character, analyse text, and work with other actors in a constructive and creative manner. The tutor will teach students to use research, physical exercises and imagery to build acting skills.
Auditions
This subject will help students to develop audition confidence, experience and techniques. Students will prepare audition pieces which suit them as performers. They will prepare speeches ranging from classical to contemporary, with the possibility to also explore film auditions.
Term 3 (Aug-Sept):
Auditions Advanced
This subject continues to develop auditioning skills, guiding, and helping to prepare for the audition process using classical to contemporary monologues. Topics include:
Workshopping - Creating and developing an idea and ensemble skills
Developing a scene
Simulated audition process - including taking direction on audition material
Voice
This subject will lead students through the fundamentals of using their voices in performance. Students will learn about breathing, breath support, resonance and articulation, as well as participating in a range of exercises to explore text. The tutor will also cover vocal health and safety, and teach students how to build and maintain strong, versatile and healthy voices.
Term 4 (Oct-Dec):
Singing (Tuesday)
Students will learn some basic singing techniques and/or improve their current skills. The tutor will teach a range of genres to assist preparation for potential audition songs and a group song for an in-class showing. In addition, students will learn acting techniques to apply to their singing performance.
Screen Acting (Thursday)
Students will learn about how to adjust their acting for the medium of film. The tutor will direct students in scenes in front of the camera, allowing them to watch themselves back, and giving detailed notes and direction to develop their film performance techniques.
