Description

Interested in engineering but want to know more about the industry? This is the foundation course for you. Gain the knowledge and skills you need to boost your prospects of employment in an engineering, fitting and turning or fabrication and welding setting. Develop your broad-based underpinning skills and learn about a range of engineering and manufacturing tasks before you take on a mechanical fitter and turner or welding/fabrication apprenticeship or traineeship. You will learn how to use engineering tools and various welding equipment in a safe and industry-appropriate way. Get your start on trade skills at TAFE SA.

Entry Recommendations
This course is recommended for those with an interest and aptitude towards working in the Engineering sector.

Attendance Requirements (subject to change)
Full time with classes 3 days a week.

Industry Conditions and Skills
You will need practical hands-on aptitude, good communication and interpersonal skills, basic literacy and numeracy skills and a basic understanding of concepts including measurements, volumes, levels, ratios, pressure, temperature and chemicals.

Additional Uniforms, Equipment and Costs
You will need to purchase and wear your own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety boots, safety glasses and appropriate workwear (eg long pants, long sleeve hi-vis shirt) Riggers gloves (approx. $5-$10), Welding gloves (approx. $8-$25) and Welding Helmet (PAPR) (approx. $100 - $200). A powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) is required as TAFE SA regard these as the primary risk control for protection from welding fumes. The helmet must have a minimum shade 10 lens. These will be provided to students who are completing on campus delivery.

    This qualification delivers broad-based underpinning skills and knowledge in a range of engineering and manufacturing tasks which will enhance the graduates’ entry-level employment prospects for apprenticeships, traineeships or general employment in an engineering-related workplace. To complete the qualification you are required to complete all 4 core units and 8 elective units.
