Description

Learn to provide physical and emotional support to older people to enhance their independence and wellbeing. The course will introduce you to all aspects of a support worker’s role including assisting with daily activities and personal care. Develop the skills to support individuals with disability, living in the community and/or supported accommodation.

Entry Recommendations
We recommend that those with limited knowledge in this area study the Certificate II Pathway to Health Studies.

Attendance Requirements (subject to change)

  • Face to face and online classes.
  • Full time is 4 to 5 days a week.
  • Part time is 3 to 4 days a week.
  • Classes at Coober Pedy commence in Term 2.

Industry Conditions and Skills
You must be able to meet the physical demands of this course including manual handling. You should have an interest in working with people, good communication, collaboration and teamwork skills; basic computer skills and multitasking ability.

Vocational Placements
You will need to complete a vocational placement in an aged care facility for a minimum of 120 hours. If you are not currently employed in a residential aged care facility, you will be placed by TAFE SA's Placement unit. To make sure that you are able to be placed, you will need to provide the required clearances, checks and certificates by the date advised.

Mandatory Requirements
You will require a current National Police check and Working with Children check, and if necessary complete a Manual Tasks and CPR refresher course before vocational placement. If you do not have these checks or certificates you may not be able to undertake vocational placement. Aged care facilities may have their own policies on vaccination requirements. You may need to show evidence of vaccination before starting your vocational placement.
