Description

Find your sea legs with this nationally recognised qualification in maritime operations. Learn all about handling vessels of up to 12 metres with seamanship skills, planning and navigating passages, and safety compliance. You’ll gain hands-on experience with basic servicing and maintenance, inboard and outboard motors, main propulsion and auxiliary systems, basic survival skills and first aid, minimising fires, and workplace safety. This qualification is required to obtain an AMSA certificate of competency as a Coxswain Grade 1 NC as defined in the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part D (see www.amsa.gov.au/qualifications-training/domestic-qualifications/coxswain-grade-1-near-coastal for more details).

Entry Recommendations
Recommended for those wanting a qualification in maritime operations. Those wanting to achieve AMSA certification for Coxswain Grade 1 will need to meet AMSA requirements including 150 days of sea going experience and medical and eyesight requirements.

Attendance Requirements (subject to change)
AMSA certification requires completion of an AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment (AMPA) for all units. Practical assessments are spread throughout the course and non-attendance for these assessments in some cases may require completion of the practical at a later scheduled date.

Industry Conditions and Skills
Together with meeting the Australian Maritime Safety Authority pre- requisites this course will help certify students to drive a commercial vessel less than 12 metres (Coxswain Grade 1) recognised across Australia. you must be prepared to work on a sea going vessel and have a reasonable level of physical fitness for practical assessments, including in water survival training. Clear verbal communication skills are needed. Some mathematics is needed for engineering and navigation calculations.

Additional Uniforms, Equipment and Costs
You will need to have and wear closed toe shoes and a spray jacket. The unit HLTAID003 Provide First Aid is not included in the fees for this course.

    This qualification includes skills in basic servicing and maintenance, inboard and outboard motors, main propulsion and auxiliary systems, basic survival skills, minimising fires, navigation, regulations, seamanship skills and workplace safety. To complete the qualification you are required to complete all 13 core units.
