TAFE SA interior design students have shown a mix of creativity and technical expertise to produce award-winning bathroom and kitchen designs.

Seven students have been named state finalists with their concept designs advancing to the ‘student category’ of the Kitchen and Bathroom Designers Institute (KBDi) national awards.

The finalists are Jayde Rowley, Brodie Filkin, Geeta Rajput, Nikolett Bognar, Leon Tian, Valentyna Kupinets and Marli Heinjus.

Jayde has an All Ages & Abilities Kitchen and a Bathroom Design in award contention and says it’s “incredibly rewarding” to have two projects recognised.

“Having my work acknowledged by industry professionals has given me confidence that the skills and knowledge I've developed throughout my studies are heading in the right direction,” she says.

“The experience has also motivated me to keep learning, refining my work and continuing to grow as a designer.”

Jayde’s shortlisted projects include an accessible kitchen “demonstrating that inclusive design can be both practical and beautiful” and a luxury ensuite and walk-in wardrobe within a repurposed office building.

“The ensuite project gave me the opportunity to explore more expressive design ideas through curved architectural forms, natural materials, integrated greenery and a skylight above the bath to create a calming, spa-like retreat,” she says.

Jayde says part of the appeal of her chosen career is “seeing how thoughtful design can positively influence the way people live every day”.

The finalists received certificates at the KBDi state awards and networking event, hosted by TAFE SA at the Tonsley Campus last month.

Students mingled with KBDi members including cabinet makers, interior designers and industry suppliers, and guests were treated to catering by TAFE SA’s cookery team.

Advanced Building Studies lecturer Robert Bayly says TAFE SA has been a consistent entrant and winner of national titles since the ‘student category’ was introduced nine years ago.

The KBDi national conference and awards night will be held in Sydney in August and Jayde says she’s looking forward to attending the event.

“While it would be wonderful to receive a national award, I'm genuinely looking forward to celebrating great design and sharing the experience with other passionate designers from around Australia,” she says.
