In the month of February, the Australian Migrant Resource Centre (AMRC) hosted a morning tea and consultation for  new arrival Afghani women who arrived in Australia between 2019 and 2021.

Over two days, more than 20 Afghan women came together in the city and northern suburbs, to meet one another, network, and learn more about the services offered at the AMRC. They also had the opportunity to meet the Afghan United Association of SA President, Mr Hussain Razaiat.

Many topics were discussed at the meet-ups including which areas of settlement individuals most needed assistance with.

Creche support was provided for those needing it.

Overall, the morning tea was a great success. The groups will now meet regularly.

Mari Rahimi is enrolled in an Adult Migrant English Program beginner class at Adelaide City Campus. Upon returning to class, she wrote the following.

‘My name is Mari Rahimi. I came to Australia 6 months ago with my husband and 2 daughters. I coached soccer in Afghanistan. I was invited to AMRC on 16th February. They promised to help Afghan women with learning, driving, medical problems, swimming, and helping to pay for electricity and gas. I thank AMRC whole-heartedly!

Sadiqa-and-FatimaSadiqa and Fatima from Certificate 2 also attended, and wrote this:

"Our class received an invitation from AMRC which is an organisation to help new arrivals settle in to a new life in Australia because it's really difficult to move to a new country and to start a new life.

Our teacher suggested we attend the meeting and we met around 20 women who were new arrivals. Jamila from AMRC asked us questions about our hopes and dreams for the future. She told us that MRC can help us in  many different ways, for example help with bills, finding a job, and medicines we might need. She also told us about short courses we can study to help us to find a job. It was a useful and interesting meeting and morning tea."
