Description

Individual support workers play a vital role in helping to meet the needs of our ageing population. They are empathetic, patient and detail-oriented carers who assist in promoting the wellbeing and independence of older people. The Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) is a course teaching the theory, skills and practices required to begin a rewarding career in the aged care sector. This course provides skills for work primarily undertaken in residential aged care facilities under direct or regular supervision within clearly defined organisational policies, guidelines and service delivery plans. It is also accepted by various community-based service providers. Further study pathways include: Diploma in Nursing (HLT54121).

Entry Recommendations
We recommend that those with limited knowledge in this area complete the Certificate II Pathway to Health Studies.

Attendance Requirements (subject to change)
Face to face and virtual classes. Full time is 4 to 5 days a week. Part time is 3 to 4 days a week. Classes at Kadina commence in Term 2.

Industry Conditions and Skills
You must be able to meet the physical demands of this course including manual handling. You should have an interest in working with people, good communication, collaboration and teamwork skills; basic computer skills and multitasking ability.

Vocational Placements
You will need to complete a vocational placement in an aged care facility for a minimum of 120 hours. If you are not currently employed in a residential aged care facility, you will be placed by TAFE SA's Placement unit. To make sure that you are able to be placed, you will need to provide the required clearances, checks and certificates by the date advised.

Mandatory Requirements
You will require a current National Police check and Working with Children check, and if necessary complete a Manual Tasks and CPR refresher course before vocational placement. If you do not have these checks or certificates you may not be able to undertake vocational placement. Aged care facilities may have their own policies on vaccination requirements. You may need to show evidence of vaccination before starting your vocational placement.
