Women in Trades - Hannah White
Name: Hannah White
Age: 20
Trade: Cabinet Making
Why did you choose your trade?
I was attracted to Cabinet Making because I like the fine details of it. I considered studying carpentry but in the end Cabinet Making won through.
Was it easy to find an apprentice employer?
It was a straightforward process because I applied through HIA, and they supported me in finding a job. Everything moved quickly. I first interviewed with HIA’s training officers, and within a week they recommended an employer. I then interviewed with that employer, and they offered me a job within another week.
Is Tonsley a female friendly environment? If yes, why?
The trainers are very welcoming and treat everyone equally. As women, we don’t want to be treated any differently from the men, and at Tonsley everyone understands that. At the moment, there’s only one other female in my class.
When you were at school, did you receive enough information about going into trades?
When I was in school, I had no idea you could work and train at the same time - I didn’t really understand what apprenticeships were. I knew university wasn’t for me because I learn best by doing. I wanted to start earning money while gaining skills, so an apprenticeship turned out to be the perfect option.
What’s the best thing about your trade?
The best thing about my apprenticeship is the variety. I work for a company that does full house renovations, so every day on site is different. One day I might be working in a bathroom, the next in a kitchen or a bedroom. No two days are ever the same.
What’s it like working in a male dominated sector?
Overall, it’s pretty cruisy and positive. Things feel equal and fair, and the crew I work with are respectful. There can still be the occasional issue, but most of the time it’s good.
Have you felt supported by your lecturers at TAFE SA? If yes, please explain why.
Yes. I feel supported because the lecturers treat all students equally and with respect—no special treatment for anyone.
What are your plans/hopes for your future career / Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
Looking ahead, I’ll probably move into carpentry since I’ve developed a broad range of skills in general building and maintenance. One day, I’d like to work my way up to being a supervisor.
Any other comments?
If girls are thinking about giving a trade a try, they definitely should. It’s eye-opening and you learn so much. The more women in trades, the more welcoming it becomes for others. It’s also really nice to have a female connection at work.
