SHORT COURSE

Introduction to Jewellery Making

Description

Learn the art of crafting silver jewellery in a six-week evening course, where you'll be introduced to fundamental skills such as saw piercing, filing, soldering, polishing, decorative finishes, and basic design principles.

Participants will receive step-by-step guidance in designing and crafting a finger ring featuring options such as a soldered band, stacked or wrapped design, along with creating a neck pendant with a pierced-out design.

The course includes:
- Initial studio orientation.
- An introduction to technical exercises including design transfer, saw piercing, filing, drilling, and papering.
- Work on a ring project: engage in soldering technical exercise, polishing techniques, and exploring alternative surface finishes.
- Work on a pendant project: explore hammering and stamping techniques, delve into surface texturing methods, and master the art of creating connections.

Participants will be required to purchase their own silver for the ring project. Set sizes are available for purchase from your tutor ranging in price from $10 to $21 per piece depending on the width of the ring band selected.

Should participants also wish to work in silver for the pendant project, it can be sourced directly from local precious metal suppliers (as directed by your tutor). The cost will vary depending on the thickness and dimensions required for each individual design. More affordable metal options such as copper and brass are available for purchase starting at $3 per sheet. The course fee also includes a small equipment pack (needle file, saw blades, emery sticks and a dust mask).
What to bring: sketch or notebook, pen, and pencil. Dress code: closed footwear (no sandals or high heels). Hair tied back.

For organisations that wish to pay the student fees for this course and are unable to pay by credit card via the website, please contact the Short Course team via email on shortcourses@tafesa.edu.au to organise a Third Party Payment invoice.
