About short courses
A short course is any single unit of study offered by TAFE SA that can be taken without the need to enrol in an award course.
One particular subject or area of knowledge is usually the focus of a short course.
Short courses usually run a maximum of one semester, though durations may vary depending on the course. For example, some courses run as little as six hours over one day; others may run full-time for two weeks; while others may run one night a week for up to 40 weeks.
Some short courses provide accreditation that can be used as credit for further study; some courses provide an industry-specific award or registration, while others may not be assessed but merely provide skills and knowledge in the subject area.
Fees will vary, depending on the duration and materials needed in the course. Concession prices are available for some courses.
Applying and enrolling
Most short courses are open to anyone, which is great. It does mean you might have to apply and enrol early to secure your spot. Application and enrolment for short courses involves submitting an application form and paying the relevant fee. This ensures your place in a course.
How to apply
You can apply for a short course by
- using the contact information in the course description
- contacting the campus hosting the course, or
- clicking on 'Make an Enquiry' in the course description, and fill out the online form, which will send an email to course administrators.
Once you've made initial contact, you'll be informed about the enrolment process for that course, including how you can make payment.
Cancellation of courses
If a course is cancelled due to low enrolments or unforeseen circumstances, the program area will notify you and you will receive a full refund or transfer to another class. Please do not purchase equipment without confirmation that your class will go ahead.
If you choose to withdraw from a class you will not be entitled to a refund of your fees. TAFE SA cannot accept responsibility for changes to your work commitments or personal circumstances.
If you would like to transfer to another class, you must give at least five clear working days' notice before the course commences. Only one transfer is permitted and only within the same year. An administration fee of $20 will be charged on each individual transfer.
You will need to pay your fees on enrolment. In some cases, there will be extra costs associated with a course, such as consumables. For specific information about your course choice, please contact the campus where the course will be held.
Concession is available for some classes if you have a:
- Pensioner Concession Card
- Health Care Card
- Veteran Affairs Card.
Check the individual course details to find out if concession is available. Concession card type, number and expiry date must be provided on enrolment. Concession status also applies to dependants of people in the above categories. Seniors Card holders are not eligible for concession.
Classes will not be held on a public holiday. If a public holiday falls during your course, it will be extended by one session or by arrangement with the lecturer.
