Description

This course provides you the opportunity to learn the necessary skills to effectively interpret in a range of settings. You will be able to concentrate on language-specific terminology with a tutor who is a certified and experienced interpreter in your language. Your classes will be in an online virtual classroom environment.

This course is comprehensive, and it is the best way to improve your interpreting skills and language proficiency to reach the necessary level to become a Certified Provisional Interpreter and a confident practitioner.
If you are already certified, you can use the Diploma of Interpreting as professional development and to improve your skills.

This qualification is endorsed by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) and is the preferred and recommended pathway by NAATI to the Certified Provisional Interpreter test.

On campus/location – learn in a classroom environment that gives you the opportunity to interact with your lecturer and fellow students in person.

Online

Online – learn at your own pace, in your own space. Lecturer support will be provided via email and interaction with fellow students may be available via forums and chat groups. Online courses require access to a computer with an internet connection.

Blended

Blended – learn in a mixture of classroom and online environments. On campus learning will be scheduled but online learning can provide more flexibility. Lecturer support will be provided for all study. Access to a computer with an internet connection is required.

Course Admission Requirements

  • Completion of Introduction to Interpreting Skill Set - PSPSS0006 and
  • Satisfactory performance in an English and LOTE oral language assessment

Entry Recommendations

  • Students must complete the Introduction to Interpreting Skill Set PSPSS0006 (or equivalent) before starting the Diploma of Interpreting
  • Information on how to enrol into this skill set can be found on the web https://www.tafesa.edu.au/xml/course/sc/sc_T685502811.aspx
  • Fees listed are for the 12 units required to complete the qualification.
    4 of the 12 units will already have been paid for and completed before starting the course through completion of the Introduction to Interpreting Skill Set required for entry into the Diploma.

Attendance Requirements (subject to change)
Classes are online virtual classroom sessions of 3 hours, 2 nights a week. Virtual classroom can be accessed anywhere you have a computer and internet connection. You will need to study privately for around 4-5 hours weekly to complete assessments and course requirements.

Industry Conditions and Skills
You will need to have high proficiency in English and a language other than English (LOTE). Good communication and interpersonal skills are required.

    Employment Outcomes

    Opportunities exist for freelance work and casual employment with interpreting agencies in a variety of areas such as general health, welfare and community services, customer and community information services. Opportunities also exist in tourism, export trade and in education (bi-lingual assistants).

    Note: Completion of a TAFE SA course does not guarantee an employment outcome. Formal requirements other than educational qualifications (eg licensing, professional registration), may apply to some occupations.

    Diploma of Interpreting (Spoken Language) (PSP50922)
    This course examines interpreting in areas of community services, health, education, employment, law, immigration and citizenship. You will learn skills and terminology specific to interpreting between your language and English. This course requires completion of 7 core units and 5 elective units. Four of these units are completed in the skills set. This qualification is endorsed by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) and is the preferred and recommended pathway by NAATI to the Certified Provisional Interpreter test.

    Note: Students who successfully complete only one or more units of competency but not the full qualification are eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment.
