Graphic designers are creative individuals who produce artwork and page layouts for reproduction in print and electronic media such as magazines, newspapers, books and websites, and for corporate identity programs and advertising campaigns. They may work as team members in design studios or advertising agencies, or alone undertaking consultancy or freelance work. Courses encompass major aspects of the electronic publishing and graphic design industry, as well as having application to web design and development.

Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design

This is a two-year study program, which incorporates both the Diploma of Graphic Design CUV50311 and Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design CUV60411. All students complete a common core of subject topics and choose their area of specialisation by completing either the Graphic Design, Digital Design or Illustration Stream. Students can exit after their first year of study at Diploma level.

Core Subject Topics
The core subject topics are delivered across all three streams and teach the foundation skills and knowledge of Graphic Design. Study topics include design foundations; computer graphics; design art and history; drawing and visual representation; typography; design studio; branding; and design business.

Delivery Mode
This is a two-year, full-time, day only course. All subjects are undertaken in a studio environment with small class sizes. Students are required to attend 18 hours of studio-based classes per week and dedicate at total of 25-30 hours per week to their studies.  

Choose Your Area of Specialisation
At the commencement of study, students choose to study either the Graphic Design, Digital Design or Illustration Stream.

  • Graphic Design Stream>
    This stream aims to develop multi-skilled individuals who will be flexible in their approach to work within the Graphic Design Industry.  Study topics include advanced typography; illustration; photo imaging; marketing; packaging design; advertising; editorial and publishing design; creative studio; and basic web design and construction.

  • Digital Design Stream
    This stream aims to develop individuals who will be able to work in a diverse range of digital and web design environments. Study topics include advanced web design and construction; editorial and publishing design; photo imaging; mobile and tablet website creation; eBook creation and digital publishing for iPad; and emerging technologies.

  • Illustration Stream
    This stream is designed to develop a range of visual art skills and knowledge which are necessary in becoming a professional illustrator. Graduates will be skilled in both traditional and digital medias and emerging technologies. Students will produce project-based quality illustrations for varying industries including publishing, advertising, film and game.
