Qualifications & Skills Covered
English for Academic Purposes Advanced
EAP Advanced aims to improve students’ skills in two main areas: General English Literacy and Academic Literacy. The course provides students with an appropriate level and style of English for academic purposes in the four macro skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The academic study skills component familiarises students with the Australian tertiary system, teachers’ expectations and various teaching methodologies typically used at tertiary level. The course mirrors materials, learning situations and requirements as well as assessment tasks found at tertiary level in Australia. Researching and Critical Thinking are integral parts of the course and enable students to become independent thinkers and learners who are able to successfully participate in academic life, side by side with local native speakers.
EAP Advanced is divided into 2 parts (weeks 1-10 & 11-20), enabling students to exit halfway to enter an undergraduate University of TAFESA award course at a level equivalent to IELTS 6. At the end of the course students are expected to reach a level equivalent to IELTS 6.5. Weekly classwork consists of 20 hours face-to-face tuition, yielding a total of 400 hours for the duration of the course. Extensive opportunities for self- study are provided outside of class hours.
Part 1 of the course focuses on introduction and practice of various academic skills required at undergraduate level at University. These skills are taught integrated with listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Part 2 focuses on consolidation and extension of these skills in preparation for study at Post-graduate level.
Note: Students who successfully complete only one or more units of competency but not the full Qualification are eligible to receive a Statement of Attainment.
