TAFE SA has launched an Honour Awards program to recognise high-achieving graduates across careers, industries and communities.

Do you know a rising star or a trailblazer who studied at TAFE SA? Nominations are now open for the 2021 Honour Awards.

TAFE SA Chief Executive David Coltman says the new awards program will celebrate the outstanding contributions of alumni across the state.

“We have many talented graduates who are making an impact in their chosen field and we want to celebrate their achievements,” he says.

“They may be quiet achievers, entrepreneurs or role models in the community, but they share a determination and commitment to excellence.

“We encourage our graduates to enter the awards and share their success stories with us.”

Among those who have already been nominated is visual artist Rebecca McEwan who completed a Bachelor of Visual Art and Design in 2016.

Rebecca had a career in the health industry when she decided to explore her interest in visual arts with part-time study at the Adelaide College of the Arts.

She had no plans to complete a second degree but, she says, after 12 months of being surrounded by like-minded students and passionate staff, she enrolled in the Bachelor course.

“It was never my intention to fully transition from working in health to visual arts, however it didn’t take long for me to realise how energised I was by learning about and making art,” she says.

Since graduating she has taken the opportunity to expand her art practice, which includes painting and sculpture, through residencies and exhibitions.

Rebecca, who won the Emerging Artist category of the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, is delighted to have been nominated for the TAFE SA Honour Awards.

“Seeking public recognition isn’t my sole intention for making work but it does, at times, play a large part in having a successful art practice,” she says.

“It often feels like you are only judged on your most recent work and successes, so to gain recognition for your overall achievements is really rewarding and has made me stop and reflect on what I have achieved since graduating six years ago.”

Nominations for the TAFE SA Honour Awards close on 13 September.
