For more than 40 years, TAFE SA has trained apprentice chefs throughout South Australia, helping southern-Adelaide locals like Kirra Comley achieve their business dreams.
Kirra’s desire to create her “own empire” led her to TAFE SA’s Noarlunga Campus and enrolment in the Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.
Graduating in 2016, Kirra opened “Kibbi’s”, a tapas bar, café and restaurant in Beach Road, Christies Beach, using the menu she had designed, costed and created during her TAFE SA assessment.
Kirra said TAFE SA gave her the practical skills and confidence to work towards creating her own successful business.
“When I finished study, I needed to make a decision about whether to work in a restaurant or go out on my own,” she said.
“The leap-of-faith decision came when I saw the delisted business name “Kibbi” - my childhood nickname - I didn’t think twice, I snapped it up and registered the name as my own.”
Her popular café uses local suppliers and free-range produce from the southern region.
“We are representing all of the great things this area has to offer, including TAFE SA,” she said.
Kirra also recently supervised two cookery students on their TAFE SA work placements.
“I wanted to give something back to TAFE SA for the life-changing opportunity, mentoring and support I received from my lecturers,” Kirra said.
TAFE SA lecturer and cookery coordinator Alan Brown has worked closely with Kirra throughout her career and says she always put in the extra effort needed to excel in the industry.
“It’s no surprise that Kirra now has her own successful business,” he said.
“She produced consistent foods and designed her own dessert dish which was a huge hit with our customers at the John Reynell Restaurant.
“We look forward to training many more successful students such as Kirra in the future.”
The John Reynell Restaurant is an a la carte training facility located within TAFE SA Noarlunga Campus and open to the general public for lunch and dinner. For bookings, please call 8207 3613.
