Carpenter and builder Luke Valente has big dreams to be the best in building other people’s dream homes.
The TAFE SA carpentry graduate is already on track to do just that, after being named the HomeStart Finance Most Outstanding Student of the Year at the 2017 TAFE SA Building and Construction Awards on Tuesday.
Mr Valente was selected from the gold medal winners in 36 building and construction qualifications for displaying outstanding work in all aspects of his trade, including excellent communication, team and leadership skills.
Mr Valente completed a Certificate III in Carpentry at TAFE SA Tonsley in 2016 and he also has a Bachelor of Construction Management and Economics from university.
He is currently employed by HMV Engineering at Gillman and can be found overseeing the carpentry function and coordinating other trades in various housing projects across Adelaide.
But the 24 year old has his sights set on bigger goals, including commercial construction and starting his own company one day, using education as his pathway to create new opportunities.
“Long term I want to be renowned as an exceptionally high quality builder with a reputation of being the best,” Mr Valente said.
“Medium term I want to keep learning as much as I can to build a thorough knowledge base on all aspects of building.”
Mr Valente said he enjoyed the hands-on experience at TAFE SA, learning multiple methods of carpentry, and absorbing insights from lecturers about working in the industry.
“The lecturers at TAFE SA are all tradespeople and have many years of experience so they had quality examples, photos and stories to tell us which I found very helpful and enjoyable,” he said.
TAFE SA Senior Education Manager, Building and Construction, Greg Bassani said Mr Valente impressed the judging panel with his desire to learn and motivation to be the best he can be.
“The TAFE SA Building and Construction Awards are a celebration of vocational training and the pursuit of excellence,” Mr Bassani said.
“Luke and the other award winners have all demonstrated outstanding commitment to learning their trades and producing high quality work.
“They are all very deserving of their accolades and we wish them well as they springboard into successful careers.”
