Easily record and upload video assignments using iPhone or iPad into your online learning (based on Moodle). It’s free and it’s fun!
Teachers can set video assignments with the installation of the
Video Assignment plugin for Moodle that is freely available from the
Moodle Plugin directory (coming soon). Using this app you can log into your Moodle online learning and view the video assignment details, then record and upload your video where ever you are!
Videos can either be pre-recorded and then uploaded when you are on a wireless network or you can record a video within the app to submit immediately via cellular or wireless connection. Videos can be uploaded using different quality level presets, to minimise data usage and upload times.
Features:
- Students easily identify video assignments that require submission via the app
- Teachers view and grade the videos within Moodle
- Choose a vide that has been recorded earlier from the library
- Record video on the spot and submit
- Quality presets can minimise data usage, and improve upload speeds
- Amazon storage minimises hosting costs of video
- Videos can be downloaded by the teacher
- Preset the maximum length of video – recording automatically stops at the limit.
Sample video
Driving Test (sort of) - Length: 1:20sec.
This video has been selected as it shows the differences in file size and clarity of the vehicle. At low quality it's definition is lost unless it is close to the viewer. Medium quality is recommended as the best trade off for size and quality.

Requirements:
All of the software required to use video assignments and the Moodle Video app is free, however the video needs to be hosted from an Amazon S3 account, which is pretty much the cheapest way to host anything anyway.
- The Download the Moodle Video App from iTunes or Google Play (coming soon), and install onto your mobile device.
- The Moodle Video Assignment plugin, available for free from the Moodle Plugins directory (coming soon): Visit the Moodle Video Assignment plugin page to download
Installed into an instance of the Moodle learning management system.
- If you are a student or teacher, your friendly Moodle administrator needs to have this installed and setup
- An Amazon S3 storage account. This is where video submissions are stored behind the scenes. A Moodle administrator will need to enter these settings for the Video Assignment plugin:
- Bucket name
- Access key
- Secret Key
Installing the Video Assignment Moodle Plugin (for Moodle Administrators)
Coming soon...
How can a lecturer, make use of it?
Lecturers don't need the Mobile App, but do need to have the Moodle Video Assignment plugin installed into the Moodle being used.
- Create a Moodle Assignment within your course, and Check "Moodle Video Assignment".
- Select the Max length for the video, keeping in mind the longer it is - the longer it will take to upload (and download) and assess. 5mins (324secs) is the suggested maximum, but the shorter the better!
You assess the video the same way as any other submission - except you are watching a video of course. Keep in mind that as an Apple device only service at the moment, you will need to provide alternative means for students without an Apple device. File submission could be used for this, however video is not practical without the App. The Android app will make it more universally accessable when available.
How does a student use it?
- Download and install the Moodle Video App onto an iPhone or iPad (Android version coming soon).
- Launch the app, and enter the full URL of the Moodle site being used (http://learn.tafesa.edu.au for TAFE SA), Username and password.
- Click on the course, and assignment to record and / or make a video submission.
The medium quality is highy recommended for good quality, and compact upload sizes.
How can I try the Moodle video App myself, as a Lecturer?
- Make yourself a Student in the applicable course (as well as Lecturer). Only students can submit assignments, so having both roles enables you to both submit and grade (review) what has been submitted - including your own.
- Complete the steps for both Lecturer and Student above
- Launch the Moodle Video App, record some video, and submit!
