To ensure students’ readiness to commence a VET pathway, the VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) has been developed by the Department for Education and Department for Innovation and Skills, as the entry point to VET for school students.
VETRO is an upfront assessment, induction, and orientation to VET to ensure that students enrol in a course that is right for them and has their personal and learning support needs planned for.
VETRO will determine a student’s readiness to commence a VET pathway and identify any support that a student may need to commence vocational training. VETRO will usually be carried out in year 10 once a student has decided to commence a vocational pathway.
Students who seek a subsidised training place in an approved course will be required to participate in a VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) which includes upfront assessment, induction and orientation to VET carried out by an RTO. The VETRO will determine the student’s readiness and identify a personalised approach to the learning which may include additional training and wraparound supports. To commence the VETRO process the students VET coordinator will complete a school student VET referral to training form

Using the Suitability and Support Needs Assessment Checklist as a guide to the minimum items that must be assessed, TAFE SA will determine if the school student has any learning or personal needs that will need to be addressed to ensure a successful training outcome. TAFE SA will look at three main areas where supports are needed to overcome barriers to success:
Where support needs are identified, TAFE SA will discuss these with the school and reach agreement on who will provide them, when and how. School agreed supports must be documented via email between the home school and TAFE SA.
All students must also undertake a literacy & numeracy assessment as part of the VETRO process and to be able to access VET for Secondary Schools (VFSS) subsidised funding.
This will be administered via a Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA), to better identify the suitable support needs for the learner. This activity is completed in an online browser under supervision and is marked by online software.
The Core Skills Profile for Adults or CSPA is an approved Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LLN) assessment tool, which assesses reading, writing and numeracy skills.The CSPA takes approximately 1 – 2 hours.Where minor or significant gaps are identified from the CSPA, TAFE SA will discuss these with the school and the school will need to consider how they can address these gaps through curriculum. School agreed supports must be documented via email between the school and the RTO. School students with significant gaps can re-apply and resit the Literacy and Numeracy assessment once their gaps have been addressed through school curriculum.
