TAFE SA Building and Construction students recently graduated from the 2015 Works Tonsley program at a ceremony held at the Colonel Light Gardens Football Club.
The 2015 Works Tonsley program is a partnership between TAFE SA and SA Government department Renewal SA. The program is a community training and employment model to maximise social inclusion benefits from community activities and participants are fully funded to learn on live training sites and build new skills to be work-ready for the industry. Participants gain valuable experience working on real infrastructure projects within their communities and the immediate area.
In addition to worksite training the students in the program have gained Certificate II in Civil Construction, Skid Steer and White Card, Elevated Work Platform, traffic control management tickets and almost half the students have gained employment in their chosen field through this program.
Students gained practical “hands on” on experience by developing skills focusing on excavation, concreting, stormwater, reading plans, set out and levelling and operating small plan and equipment onsite.
TAFE SA student Milan Zivkov said the program changed the course of his career. As a toolmaker by trade and after a redundancy from Bridgestone, Milan was looking for a career change. From the program the qualification he has gained has allowed him to follow his career in civil construction.
“The training has opened new doors to long term employment in areas such as civil construction. The experience gained is invaluable to my understanding of the training needed to gain ongoing employment,” said Mr Zivkov.
Renewal SA Chief Executive, John Hanlon, says the program ensures communities benefit from urban renewal activities.
“The Renewal SA Works Program provides important training and employment initiatives with project partners to facilitate valuable community and social inclusion benefits from our urban renewal activities”.
