TAFE SA studies leads to X-Men involvement

Feb 19, 2015

Over the past two years eight TAFE SA graduates specialising in CGI and Visual Effects (VFX) have been employed by Rising Sun Pictures (RSP). These students have been working on numerous Hollywood blockbusters, including the recent Academy Award® nominated X-Men: Days of Future Past.

TAFE SA CGI and Visual Effects StudentsRSP’s VFX Producer, Ian Cope said our TAFE SA graduates have worked across various departments including lighting, camera tracking, compositing, effects and other support roles.

“Currently TAFE SA graduates are working on Pan, Tarzan & Gods of Egypt, and have recent credits including The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, X-Men: Days of Future Past, The Water Diviner, Deadline Gallipoli, ANZAC Girls, and The Wolverine,” Ian said.

“We are pleased to have an ongoing relationship with TAFE SA, who, like RSP, are committed to providing quality training and graduates that meet the needs of the visual effects industry.”

TAFE SA Senior Lecturer, Anna Hodge said TAFE SA has a close relationship with RSP and other key players in the visual effects, film and television industry.

“We constantly seek industry input to our program delivery through involvement in industry events, ongoing staff training, guest industry lectures and a practical hands-on approach, which strengthens the relevance of our course and ensures our students are always industry ready,” she said.

Rising Sun Pictures along with other leading Adelaide-based visual effects and games companies are an integral part of the TAFE SA Screen and Media Industry Reference Group.  The group’s feedback and input into educational delivery standards ensures that training always remains current and relevant.

“This provides an excellent foundation for our graduates by making them technologically savvy and well equipped to meet the ever changing demands of the film and visual effects industry,” Anna said.

TAFE SA graduate, Harry Medlin commenced work with RSP in November last year. Achieving a career in visual effects had always been Harry’s dream since leaving high school. After completing a double degree in Media and Arts at the University of Adelaide, Harry chose to enrol into the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media specialising in CGI and VFX at TAFE SA to expand on his practical skills.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed studying at TAFE SA. The lecturers, staff and facilities were excellent. They were always willing to help, even on weekends, taking extra time out of their days to help us achieve our best.”

“The Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media (CGI and VFX) was a great course, which provided me with the fundamental skills to work within the visual effects industry,” Harry said.

Since graduating from TAFE SA, Harry has worked on a number of major films, including Unbroken, Pan, Tarzan and Gods of Egypt.

Other TAFE SA graduates currently working at RSP include David Cattermole, Simon Walsh, Jack Fench, Michael Slater; Dylan Shaw, John Toth and Michael Furniss.

TAFE SA offers the Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media (Specialising in CGI and VFX), with the Advanced Diploma offering a university pathway towards degrees in Creative Arts (Digital Media) at Flinders University, a Bachelor Media at Adelaide University and a Bachelor of Media Arts at the University of South Australia.  Please visit the CGI & Visual Effects page of the TAFE SA website for more information on these courses.
