TAFE SA Welding and Fabrication courses give you an advantage
TAFE SA apprentice Hayden Butcher’s hard work has paid off after completing his Certificate III in Metal Fabrication and his four year apprenticeship at Torrens Island Power Station. This month Hayden won the 'People's Choice' award and was a finalists for the Apprentice of the Year award at this year’s industry 2014 SA Training Awards.
Hayden, from Hallett Cove, credits his studies and work experience behinds these wins.
“Four years as a metal fabrication apprentice has helped me develop skills which will stay with me for life. I walk away from my apprenticeship with a Certificate III in metal fabrication, a massive increase in knowledge, confidence and technical ability,” said Hayden.
“I believe I have had some of the best training possible in South Australia. The tradespeople I have worked with and lecturers who have taught me have had welding and fabrication experiences all across Australia and even overseas. The skills I have learnt from these people helped me to win two bronze medals in the 2011 Construction Steelwork and Welding World Skills Competitions; in addition I also received encouragement awards in both the 2012 and 2013 WTIA Young Tradesperson of the Year Award".
TAFE SA Engineering lecturer Dean Lawrence said TAFE SA’s facilities and courses play a vital role in developing welding and fabrication skills for the defence sector and metal trade industry.
“The facilities are designed to enable both practical use of a wide range of commercial welding plant and space for larger build projects using the welding skills learnt,” Mr Lawrence said.
“As a result, our students can put their skills and knowledge into a very real practical application, resulting in a nationally recognised qualification that is highly sought after by industry.”
Programs offered at TAFE SA include apprenticeships in boiler making (welders) and up-skilling welding programs including pipe welding and welding for the defence sector.
As the largest provider of vocational education training in South Australia, TAFE SA has flexible study options, and work-place based training to transform your future.
