TAFE SA Printing student Robert Wilson has won the National LIA (Lithographic Association of Australia) 2011 Graduate of the Year.

Robert who studied a Certificate III in Printing works for Detmold Packaging was announced the winner at the Queensland Pica Awards Gala Dinner last month.

The biennial GAMAA-LIA National Graduate Scholarship Prize is sponsored by GAMAA(Graphic Arts Merchants Association of Australia) and is awarded on the premise the winner undertakes further education, either formal or in the field.

The $15,000 scholarship is presented at the LIA Biennial Conference and reflects GAMAA long-term commitment to developing leadership and best practice in the Industry.

Ten graduates, winners from the previous and current year State competitions, vied for this prestigious scholarship.

TAFE SA winner Robert’s first step will be to purchase a digital recorder to document the next 12 months. “I intend to use the funding from the scholarship to visit Detmold Packing in China to look at their processes and discover new innovations they are making with a view to implement those practices back in Australia. I then plan to travel to Germany to attend DRUPA (the largest printing equipment exhibition in the world) to interview major manufacturers for their views on where they think the print industry is heading.”

The footage Robert obtains will be edited and presented at a Lithographic Institute evening both in South Australia and interstate.

TAFE SA Educational Manager, Creative Industries, Sandra Neville says, “Robert’s enthusiasm for the industry is evident and it’s fantastic his talent is being recognised by industry peers. His scholarship is well deserved and will kick-start his already successful career.”
