Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis officially opened the purpose-built centre on Monday 16 February, a first for South Australia.

“This centre will train hundreds of industry workers in a fully immersive, simulated oil and gas production environment, without the need for costly fly-in, fly-out arrangements,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

“Industry workers will be able to undertake a Certificate II in Petroleum Production Operations and TAFE SA is currently finalising a Certificate IV qualification to meet the skill requirements of the OPCE partners.”

TAFE SA Director Alison Roberts praised the immense benefits of the close collaboration the Mining, Engineering and Transport Centre Mining and Resources Program has had with the Oil and Gas partners within the OPCE.

Santos, Senex and Beach Energy have provided extensive feedback in relation to the development of training materials, recommending industry contacts as specialist lecturers and enabling access for TAFE SA staff to the on job environment in oil and gas,” she said.

“We have the opportunity for delivery and assessment within the OPCE for 52 weeks per year. Increasingly oil and gas companies and suppliers to the industry are making contact to plan their training activities. The OPCE has enabled TAFE SA to enhance its capability and take an important role in ensuring a skilled workforce for the oil and gas industry.”
