TAFE SA fitness graduate Jo Hillas is helping to improve the health and wellbeing of her community by opening a local gym in Ceduna.
The Ceduna 4evafit Gym, the only fitness centre in the remote community, has been assisting many locals to improve their lifestyle. Offering personal training, group exercise classes, a weight loss program and a specific program for a group of indigenous youth, the gym caters to the needs of many individuals in the community.
Jo, who completed a Certificate III in Fitness with TAFE SA four years ago, said the qualification gave her the opportunity to complete further studies in the fitness industry.
“I use the skills I learnt at TAFE SA every day, from group exercise instruction right through to customer relations and business management,” Ms Hillas said.
“My lecturers were so enthusiastic and passionate that I could not help but be inspired by them. They taught in a fun and interesting way and were available to provide support for my online studies,” she said.
The motivated graduate said she was always passionate about fitness, and TAFE SA’s flexibility suited her lifestyle.
“I always enjoyed attending fitness sessions as a client and then decided it was what I wanted to do as my career. I was able to complete my course through face-to-face sessions and online assignments,” Ms Hillas said.
“I would not be where I am today - running my own gym - if it were not for the qualifications I gained from TAFE SA,” she said.
