TAFE SA contributes to Sampson Flat Bushfire Recovery

Feb 26, 2015

burnt out treeTAFE SA’s Conservation and Horticulture program is contributing to the Sampson Flat Bushfire recovery effort by offering a unique course with a focus on bushfire recovery.

The Certificate II in Horticulture (Bushfire recovery) which is due to commence Friday May 15 is a 10 day course running on Fridays and Sundays over 6 weeks. Located within the Kersbrook Forest in partnership with Forestry SA, participants will learn the skills in the safe operation and maintenance of chainsaws, tree felling and trimming, maintaining and repairing fencing, erosion control and many other skills.

The course is targeted to residents, landowners and volunteers wishing to assist in the bushfire recovery effort.   Students will be putting their new skills into practice on the fire ground by undertaking a tree recovery program.  Fallen timber from trees will then be cut into 1.2 metre pieces of timber and the timber will be donated to primary schools in the bushfire affected area.

Peter Clark, Principal Lecturer of TAFE SA said:

“After the devastation of the Sampson Flat Bushfire this program will contribute to building capacity in the local community to assist in bushfire recovery.”

Under the State Government’s Skills for All initiative, the course will be offered fee free (*pending eligibility criteria).   Limited spaces are available.

For more information on TAFE SA Horticulture courses and units, contact Nicola at Urrbrae Campus on 8372 6803.
