Aboriginal ‘Young Guns’ learn employability skills

Mar 22, 2012

A group of local young Aboriginals is gaining new skills as part of the ‘Young Guns Multiskills Program’ offered by the Aboriginal Access Centre at TAFE SA Port Lincoln Campus.

The program, instigated by Jenny Johncock, Senior Education Manager of TAFE SA Aboriginal Access Centre, is proving to be a success.

Coordinated by TAFE SA Regional, and supported by partnerships with the Port Lincoln Aboriginal Community Council (PLACC), Career Employment Group and Heta Incorporated, the 13 male students have been given an opportunity to gain lifestyle and work-ready skills to increase their employability.

Lifestyle skills include managing a budget, cooking, health, fitness and well-being, and first aid. In addition to these lifestyle skills, the students have had exposure to the mining, aquaculture and construction industries, as well as training in chainsaw and forklift operations.

The ‘Young Guns’ will be working on a range of construction projects in the community, including the relocation of the playground at PLACC. Mock interviews and work experience are incorporated into the course.

“Since the start of the program the students have developed a greater sense of responsibility and confidence,” said Aboriginal Access Lecturer Mick Davison.

“The skills the students are gaining will enhance their employability in many industries, enabling them to be productive within the workplace from the start.”
