TAFE SA Campus Brewery scoops silver medal at AIBA

Jun 02, 2015

AIBA_SILVER_MEDAL_25mm_SOLID_CMYKTAFE SA’s Campus Brewery has been awarded a silver medal at the 2015 Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) held in Melbourne recently for their project beer – Koyt.

Presented by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV), the Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) is the largest competition of its kind in the Asia Pacific region and is renowned for celebrating beer and brewing excellence in Australia and around the world.

TAFE SA Brewing Lecturer, Stephen Nelsen said the win is fantastic recognition for TAFE SA’s Campus Brewery and the brewing students involved in the Koyt project.

"Our beer won the only silver medal in the category of Best European Style Ale, which was the highest awarded, amongst many other entries from across Australia and overseas, which proves we can compete against the best in the industry," he said.

"My students uncovered a mediaeval Dutch recipe for a beer using 40% oat malt, and brewed it here in our Campus Brewery.

We sourced the oat malt from England, and rye, wheat and the other malts and hops from the Netherlands. The yeast is a Kölsch style, top fermenting and spritzig with a little pear-drop ester."

The AIBA provides brewers with an opportunity to benchmark their beers against international industry standards and aims to create greater consumer awareness of the quality and diversity of beer styles available in Australia and internationally.

Held in conjunction with Good Beer Week, the 2015 AIBA attracted a record number of entries with more than 1,700 submissions from 344 exhibitors, across 35 countries.

TAFE SA’s Campus Brewery located at Regency campus comprises a state-of-the-art micro-brewery and automated bottling machine, associated plant and laboratories.

TAFE SA delivers a range of specialised brewing related short courses, including mash brewing, micro brewing and beer flavours and styles.

Courses are ideal for existing pub and craft brewery owners and workers, or those looking for entry into this exciting and rapidly expanding industry.
