Visual merchandising is about creatively presenting merchandise in a retail, promotional or similar environment. Visual Merchandisers are also responsible for display windows. People in this field need to think on their feet, love working with their hands and be flexible in their approach to the job.
Our visual merchandising courses provide students with up-to-date merchandising and presentation techniques, including in-store merchandising ‘stories’ by merchandise category. Students learn to present merchandise in a variety of ways using colour, brand, style and price. They develop sound design principles and knowledge of the concept of commercial creativity and a broad range of fixtures, mannequins and body forms.
Visual Merchandising Courses
We have developed strong industry links over the 20+ years that we have run this course. As a result graduates often find employment with our industry partners, listed below. Graduates may also find opportunities to freelance on a full-time or part-time basis.
The visual merchandising faculty has strong links with the retail industry and related sectors. We receive ongoing support from the following retailers:
- Country Road
- David Jones
- Freedom Furniture
- French Connection
- Harris Scarfe
- Wheel & Barrow
Industry support is provided in the form of a work placement program. This is valuable to students as they get to work alongside industry professionals, many of whom have completed a Diploma of Visual Merchandising at TAFE SA. The possibility also exists for project work with other local retailers and businesses.
