TAFE SA Adelaide College of the Arts (AC Arts) acting graduates Tom St Jack and recent Neil Curnow Award winner Ellonye Keniry are preparing to enter the ring in their new adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry 6th trilogy - and we mean that quite literally! This intense and epic story distils three plays into one ever moving hour with all the action taking place in a 6m wide circle, on a stage that spins.
Performed in the round, these two actors will expose how a woman and a small handful of men can be the bleeding heart of such an epic conflict. Away from giant battlefields the focus returns to the wife, the lover, the husband, the father, the traitor, the victim, the soldier and the mother whose instincts and desires drive it all.
Audiences will find themselves mere feet away from the characters, encircling the action taking place, where the simplest objects like a jacket or a scarf can transform and even represent a character. Here one man can be five and one woman can grow from an innocent child to the 'she wolf of France'.
Of the process of adapting three plays into a 60 minute piece to be performed by only two actors Ellonye said: “Shakespeare has given us as a starting point a story with marriage, murder, sacrifice, betrayal, passion, violence and loss...so it was a pretty cool place to start! The challenge was then to find in all this the thread, the human story inside the plays that we wanted to tell...oh and making sure one couldn't pick out the occasional lines I had to write!”
And if Shakespeare's offerings weren't gift enough, the two actors have been joined by AC Arts dance graduate Erin Fowler whose choreography, like the story moves startlingly between tender elegance and explosive passion.
However behind the choices and the consequences is the question Ellonye seeks to ask: What would you do for someone you love?
